Product Feature
- Converts the Wii AV port to an HDMI port
- Includes additional 3.5mm stereo audio output
Product Description
Until now, Wii could not be connected to an HDTV via the HDMI port. How This WorksThe Wii HDMI adapter plugs directly into your Wii's cable port (the same port you use to connect the Wii video cable that is included with the Wii). After you have plugged it into this port, you will have an available HDMI port. You will also need to purchase an HDMI cable if you don't have one already.PerformanceThis adapter creates a super-accurate, rich and vibrant 480p reproduction of your Wii's video signal. For the best performance, make sure your Wii's video output setting is switched to 480p (also called "Enhanced Definition" in your Wii Resolution settings). This will double the average refresh rate of your pixels and deepen the colors.Audio Break-outThe Wii to HDMI adapter includes an audio break-out port that allows you to send stereo audio to another audio device of your choice (like an audio receiver). The port is in the form of 3.5mm stereo port.Handles Both Audio and Video through HDMI TooSince HDMI is an audio/video signal, this device rises to the task and handles both through the HDMI port. This conveniently allows you to run a single cable to your TV unless you wish to break the audio out separately using the adapter's break-out 3.5mm port.
Sewell Wii to HDMI Converter, 480p Review
I had component cables for my Wii that did a great job at providing 480p output, but I bought a new upscaling AV receiver (RX-V673) and found out after buying it that it can't upscale 480p from component for some reason (although it *can* upscale 480i through component or 480p through HDMI).
So this converter was exactly what I needed to feed 480p output to my receiver, which can then upscale it to 1080p to my TV. It's also just way easier and cleaner to use HDMI cables than analog cables (1 hdmi cable for audio & video vs 3-5 composite/component cables).
I looked at some of the other Wii HDMI converters, but I decided to get this one because:
a) Most of the others were off-brand ones of questionable quality
b) Most of the others were sold directly from Hong Kong or some weird place instead of being fulfilled by amazon and getting my 2-day free shipping with Prime
c) Most of the others upscaled to 1080i or 720p, which means it would then have to be upscaled again to 1080p, and you really don't want to be scaling a signal more than once or you just end up with crappy output
d) Even if another one did upscale to 1080p, I would prefer it to just take the Wii's native 480p output to my receiver and let my receiver do the upscaling, which is surely of better quality than the other converters' built-in scaling.
Summary: Probably the best HDMI converter available for the Wii. It would be nice if the converter was smaller, physically, but it's not a big deal. The only real complaint I have is that Nintendo should have built the Wii with HDMI output and 1080p support from the beginning, but that really has nothing to do with this product. 5 stars.
