Musical Fidelity V-LINKII 24bit 96kHz USB to SPDIF Converter Review

I purchased the V-Link MK II for my Cambridge Audio DacMagic + laptop. I wasn't really sure what to expect, let alone an actual sonic improvement. I wanted galvanic isolation to eliminate electronic garbage coming from my laptop. But I was also concerned that the Toslink connection would sound inferior to a coaxial connection (a common audiophile assertion).

My first goal was to determine whether pc audio sounded better with the V-Link MK II than when the DacMagic was on it's own:

I kept the DacMagic connected via it's USB input, and hooked up the V-Link MK II via Toslink with input 2 on the DacMagic. I started with the V-Link MK II in the chain. My initial impression was that it sounded neutral overall, with a hint of warmth. It also sounded more powerful, smoothe and detailed than I remembered. To be certain I switched the input to the USB on the DacMagic.

Wow! It only took about 15-20 seconds to determine how inferior the DacMagic sounded on its own. By contrast, it sounded like the signal had variation; something that I never perceived before. It also sounded relatively anemic. This was confirmation to me that the V-Link MK II pulls accurate bit-rate information from the pc. Perhaps this is what caused the perception of some warmth in the sound; possibly from improved bass response? It was a very mild warmth and bass had better definition and impact than before. In an all solid-state system (like mine) this is welcomed. The soundstage was also more expansive with the V-Link in the chain.

Keep in mind that the DacMagic sounds equally good when hooked up as a DAC for a CD player or DVD player. The true limiting factor in the above scenario isn't the DacMagic; it's the pc. For pc audio, therefore, the V-Link MK II truly improves the incoming signal conditions to help DACs which lack galvanic isolation and Asynchronous USB. To me the only better option is to purchase a high-quality DAC that has Async USB and galvanic isolation in a single chassis. Can you say "Big bucks!".

My second goal was to compare the coaxial and optical connections of the V-Link MK II:

Is there a sonic difference between them? I had 6 ft length connections for both types. Short-and-sweet; I couldn't tell a difference, except...there was no electronic grunge from the optical connection. My conclusion ... Toslink wins.

I was hard-pressed to find any faults with the V-Link MK II. It does what it's designer claims, sounds fantastic, is simple to use and easy to install. Fit 'n' finish is nice silver-aluminum. The only thing I can come up with is that it's not very well-damped when doing the "knuckle-rap" test. Anyone who can hear the chassis from the listening position isn't human; get over it.

Cable Matters 2 Pack, SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Type A to Micro-B Cable in Black 6 Feet Review

I bought this cable after reviews from the portable USB 3.0 WD external hard drive I bought used stated that the low transfer speeds were due to the oem supplied USB 3.0 cable. As soon as I tested with the cable bought, my transfer speeds did increase to almost doubled, not as fast as USB 3.0 speeds advertise, but then again that was due to the HD being a mechanical hard drive.

The length of the cable is long enough that I can hide the hard drive tucked out of the way when I bring it to DJ.

4 weeks in use and have not had an issue.

I would recommend this product.

LENEXPO AT-DP200 DVI to Mini Display Port Converter Review

I'm currently using my MacBookPro (mid 2007) with a LED Cinema Display without any problems. Not only recognises the screen properly, including colour profiles, etc. but I'm also using the screen's camera, speakers and usb ports. I can also charge my laptop with the cable from the screen.

Hard to believe that the people at Atlona could put together this little converter while Apple simply ignored their own customers.

The only little problem I've found is that once every now and then (about once every 15 times I wake up my Mac) the screen doesn't wake up with it. Is not a big deal since the converter has a reset button on it, so it's just a matter of pressing reset and re-waking up the computer.

Haven't tried any other solutions but very happy with this one so far :)

SPECIALTY-AV SCART to Component Video Converter for Sega, Genesis, Atari Review

So I picked one of these up recently, hoping to get the best possible picture quality with my Sega Saturn on my modern Samsung LCD - and no question, the picture is sharp as hell. That being said, expect a few hassles before you're up and running:

1) You'll need a SCART cable to run from your console to this box (duh), but most importantly: you'll want to head to eBay (or whatever) and find a SCART cable with RCA out built into it, for your audio. The box doesn't output any audio at all, so you're looking for a cable that will have three ends: the SCART (which will plug into the box), and the two audio (which will plug directly into your TV). Or, if you have the mad cable-making skilz you could make one yourself.

2) You'll need a Component cable (just the 3 video, you don't need the 5-end one with audio because you've got that in your custom SCART, remember?) to run from the box to your TV, and finally

3) You'll need a small phillips screwdriver, because almost undoubtedly you'll have to pop the box open when you get it and adjust the output - people have said their colors were all out of whack using this right out of the box, and mine was no different. You make these adjustments by putting in a game with a good mix of colors on screen and fine tune until everything looks right and the whites don't have a tinge. Don't worry: I'm not a technical person, but it's fairly simple. You'll see a few little plastic pots you can adjust with the screwdriver: the one closest to the component out adjusts green vs. blue (one way is more green, the other more blue), and the pot closest to the SCART adjusts the red. I don't know what the others are so you probably shouldn't mess with them.

Once you jump through all the above hoops (and assuming you're okay with the mess of cables you now have), you'll be happy. The picture is as clean and crisp as an emulator - far superior to S-Video, and totally worth $50 or so.

I was totes hesitant to buy this product, considering multiple different products had the same image, and there were no reviews for any of them, however, as it was backed by Amazon, I knew I could get my money back. What had I to lose?

I bought it for a 3D television, that did not have the built in feature of upconverting 2D programming into 3D, like most 3D televisions I've seen do, and it does that. It doesn't seem to do as good a job, but depending on the what you're watching, it can be fairly noticeable. The most obvious effect is that it seems to tilt the image on the television, to create depth.

Also, it is worth mentioning that the product does more than the Amazon listings claim.
