ViewHD Composite AV to HDMI Converter (Model: VHD-AV2HDMI) Review
This ViewHD 8X1 Multifunctional HDMI Converter Switcher is the powerful and compact "do-it-all" high performance item, with nice EDID adjustment feature.About the EDID Select feature, there are 4 choices:
1080P 2CH, which is 1080P, 3D, 2ch stereo sound
1080P 6CH, which is 1080P, 3D, 5.1ch, surround sound
1080P 8CH, which is 1080P, 3D, 7.1ch, surround sound
Auto Copy, which is to copy the EDID code of the unit at its HDMI output, and present it to the HDMI video source at is HDMI input.
About Audio:
Remember, this unit does not create or change the incoming audio format; what these EDID select modes do, is to let the video source know what kind of audio format the display unit wants, so that the video source can try to meet this request. For example, if you connect the HDMI to a TV directly, then most likely that TV can only take 2CH sound, so you need to use the "AutoCopy" or "1080P 2CH" mode; but if the HDMI output goes to an audio receiver, which can handle surround sounds, so it is better to use the other more advanced audio options. You will not have sound if your TV can only do 2CH, but the video source sends 5.1CH or 7.1CH sound. This is the root cause of the problem with no audio.
If you don't get sound, please make sure that you put the unit either in Auto Copy mode, or 1080P 2CH mode. This should solve the problem. The problem that you don't get audio, is because the audio sent by the video source unit is not understood by the speaker unit, by adjusting the EDID, the video source unit will send the audio in easier to understood format to solve this problem.
About Video:
If your TV does not support 1080P, then it is better to use "Auto Copy" mode for best compatibility, just try these options to find the best option for your application, and this can be video source dependent. For example, if your TV is 1080i instead of 1080P, then when you use "1080P 6CH" mode, it may works great, because the video source is a dish network receiver, which can only do 1080i, so you get the best sound and video at 1080i; but when you switch to a Samsung Blu-ray player which can do 1080P, it will send 1080P in all the three "1080P" modes, then you will not get picture on your 1080i TV. You have to use the "Auto Copy" mode, so that the video source can know your TV is 1080i, it will send video in 1080i for you to get picture.
If you don't get video/audio, please make sure you also use the "Auto Copy" or "1080P 2CH" buttons on the remote to set this switcher in the most compatible states. Power reset will not change the EDID, because this unit has memory, it will remember the previous EDID setting and go back to it, so user should use the remote to address this issue. At this time, there is known compatibility problem (no video, or poor video) with Panasonic 3D Blu-ray player, such as the DMP-BDT215, when the unit's EDID select is in "Auto Copy" mode, just put the unit in any other EDID select modes will fix this problem. At this time (before May 2012) if your TV is NOT 1080P, and you want to use Panasonic 3D Blu-ray player, please do not purchase this unit. This is not a defect case, it is a compatibility issue.
Regarding VGA (analog) to HDMI digital conversion: This 8x1 switcher support VGA to HDMI conversion up to 1920x1200@60Hz, covers 1080P and 720P, for HDTV. If you don't get video from VGA input, please do power reset by power down the unit using the power button then power it back on, while everything else are connected and on.
++++++++
Regarding Remote Control Application
To use the remote control, the remote sensor must be connected to the main unit, the main unit can be hidden, and the remote control should point to the remote sensor to control this unit. The remote control will NOT work, if the remote senor is not connected to the main unit. There is a push button on the unit for input selection, without using the remote control.
+++ 21/30/2013 Update: The compatibility issue related to Panasonic TV / Blu-ray Player has been fixed in the current version.
