I purchased this item because all my Comcast channels are copyright protected. This device is very simple to connect,... IN, OUT and plug it in. Now my DVD/VCR recorder no longer blocks me from recording whether it's a tape or a DVD. I did not notice degradation in picture quality but then it depends on what speed you record. I do however, take the time to disconnect it if I don't plan on using it for any length of time. No point leaving it powered up for weeks or months if you don't use it. Sound and picture seem to be synchronized perfectly.

Etekcity Hdmi Extender Adapter Over 1 Single Ethernet Cat5e /6 (Up to 150 Feet) Review

For my budget, this product fit perfectly. My goal was to run two 50ft Cat6e cable up the wall in one of my bedrooms, over the ceiling, and back down another wall to a 42" flat screen. I tested it before-hand with my cables and some other, shorter, cat5 cables. Both worked wonderfully, although Cat6 can be adapted for other uses incase you get rid of this adapter.

The only problem I have with it are the tiny green artifacts that I get, pushing a 1920x1080 resolution. It looks almost like a stuck pixel, but they flash ever-so slightly. You can usually only see them in the black-blacks in an image.

If I dim down to any other resolutions, I get a quality image without any artifacts. I've found that lowering my refresh rate from 30hz, to 24hz helps to get rid of alot of the artifacts at my high resolution. Of course, you may not have this problem running a lower resolution, or even a shorter cable. I might also add that I am going from a PC to a plasma television.

Orei XD-990 PAL HDMI / Composite to NTSC HDMI 50/60 Hz Multi-System Video Converter - Up to 1080p Review

The device does what it should and with good quality, and that's the important thing.
I am using it in Israel to bridge between a DVBT STB and a US version of Panasonic Viera HDTV. Now everything is great and I am happy with this buy. But (the big tip is bellow)....

I managed to set it up initially quit quickly, without recognizing that I had more luck than brains :). An electrical power interruption changed that, as settings got reset and I had to set it up again.
I couldn't, and contacted Orei tech support. They were very helpful explaining how to use their poor interface (a big word for 3 buttons) to set up the device. I should mention that none of this explanation is anywhere to be found in the device literature (another big word). They promised the next batch will be more user friendly...

The issue:
There are 3 buttons on the device: one for type of connectivity you use (composite\HDMI), second for output-resolution (720p/1080p), third for format (PAL/NTSC).
There is a special way of using those buttons and if you don't know it you can't use the device:
Single press on any button is good for displaying the current relevant setting on the screen (that is if you see anything on the screen, otherwise you are working blind until you get the setting right and be able to see anything).
To actually change the mode (on each button) you need press the button twice and quickly (slowly will just show the information twice). That's the big secret. It's a shame I almost throw the device away because of a thing like that.

This item in an SDI equipped facility is an absolute staple item. I probably have 10 in use right now. Easy. Simple. Converts pretty much any flavor of SDI, HD-SDI to HDMI for display on any monitor equipped with an HDMI jack. This simple brick can be mounted to the back of most equipment with some industrial-strength 2" velcro, some zip ties, etc. This adapter allows consumer-grade plasmas or LCD screens to become studio monitors. It will save you a ton of money compared to buying special monitors with the capability to purchase an even more specialized, proprietary SDI card (I'm looking at you, Panasonic). The 1/4" audio jacks provide line level audio of any pair of the embedded 8 channels of audio in the SDI signal. I use this to drive some powered monitors locally in a green room (the HDMI signal also carries the audio signal along to the attached monitor & internal speakers). This only converts from SDI to HDMI. If you need to go the other way, Blackmagic Design sells another item for that purpose (Blackmagic Design HDMI to SDI Converter). Double check before purchasing.

I used this converter to hook up several old game systems, both directly and via two daisy chained RCA switchers. I will describe my results. The video switchers work great with it, no apparent difference with or without them.

Sega Genesis - Very impressive. Some blurriness is to be expected. The Genesis seems to detect my setup and output in widescreen! There is no distortion - circles are circles. The picture fills the screen. Cool!

Sega Dreamcast - No problems here. Video is as sharp as can be over RCA cables. Someday maybe I will get the VGA box, but that usually costs several times the price of the HDMI converter.

Super Nintendo - Sadly, this was the worst of the batch. Stretched video, extra blurry, I even get distorted colors. Obviously not too much is to be expected from these 16-bit systems, and I should probably blame only the SNES. Sill, I would like the converter to have some better color handling. I would give it a 4.5 for this, if possible.

Nintendo 64 - Not too shabby. I use the same video cable as the SNES. Some games utilize the expansion pak to output higher-res graphics and those usually have the option for widescreen. For instance, Turok 2. There is a list on Wikipedia (probably). The games that do not have this option are above SNES quality, and look alright from far away.

There does exist a VGA box that is meant to work with Genesis, SNES, as well as N64, and possibly other systems. I do not know if it works well or at all, as it goes for even more than the DC VGA box.

PSX - Holy crap I am glad the PS2 is backwards compatible and I have a composite cable for it. The PSX output is irredeemably stretched and the way those jaggies turn into blur makes it hard to look at. I might have to get out the PSX for an imported game, if I'm really desperate, but that is the only case I would not use the PS2 instead. A bit sad.

Overall, an awesome converter for my purposes. 4.5 stars!

We're running 5 cameras about 400 feet from our auditorium to our control room. They're HDMI. We tried to do it with HDMI to CAT6 baluns. We bought 6 different baluns-- some cost $79, others $550. None worked. Even for shorter runs (200'), the baluns couldn't maintain 1080.

Enter these Blackmagic HDSDI converters. Not only do they work (convert hdmi to HDSDI at the camera, send over RG6, enter the switch as HDSDI), but they seem to hold signal. Only once or twice have we had a failure of the signal, and then for only a few seconds.

If attempting to use this on a Mac, PLEASE be sure to read the system requirements. As of this writing you need to be running OS 10.6.8, which none of the computers at my work are running yet. So that was the first speedbump in testing out this product. We ended up installing on a Windows 7 system which seemed to go fairly smoothly after a few "Updating Software" downloads....even though we had JUST downloaded the newest software from the BlackmagicDesign website. A couple computer restarts and we were ready to go.

Note * Don't believe the documentation that came with the unit when it says where to go to download the software (there is no CD included in the box, you MUST download the software from the website) I typed in the URL and came up with the 404 page not found error. Nice. Finally ended up navigating all through the support website to find what I needed.

The next thing I noticed warranted a "Seriously...?" comment, the fact that it did not come with a USB cable. Seriously...$500 for a piece of equipment and it doesn't come with a $4 USB cable?? We dug around our facility and found what we needed. (Mini USB)

Once we plugged everything in we were able to connect our Sony EX-1 to the HD-SDI in and could start testing. There is a 3 second delay while the unit encodes the video to H.264, so what you see in the camera viewfinder shows up on the computer screen about 3 seconds later. That is to be expected, but would have been nice to know before we bought it. The software is a no frills capture/playback tool. It looks like it has machine control (RS-422) for capture/layback to a tape deck but is not necessary for our project so it is untested by me. As stated in the name, it captures only H.264 so...that's it. Don't plan on using this to capture high quality uncompressed video for editing.

You have several recording options in the "supplied" software including presets for YouTube. I was disappointed to not see a preset for Blu-ray, but for what we need to do right now it's not a big deal. For future projects it would be nice to be able to capture to a Blu-ray compliment stream in real time.

The quality is very good in our tests. Capturing at 1080p 10Mbps was more than enough for our purposes, the bitrate maxes out at 20Mbps in the customization area for capturing. We were able to capture without dropping frames even to an external USB hard drive.

We still need to test in on a Mac but overall I think this is a good unit if you need to capture H.264 files in good quality....fast.
