We needed this device to output an S-video feed from an old security system to a PC. This little device did the job beautifully. It saved us a whole lot of hassle (and money) to make the old system function in a newer environment. We even tinkered with it (tech nerds!) to see how it would work with the composite video. No problems there either.

There are more expensive and more complicated converters out there, but this one does an admirable job. For a niche product, it is constructed pretty well, and it's certainly better than a similar device we checked at Radio Shack.

True, it's not cinema quality video, but did you really think you'd get that quality via S-video?

This $50 device saved us from having to spend $2500 on newer equipment (okay, well, next year we'll be upgrading, but for now...)

Manhattan 177351 VGA to HDMI Converter Review

The specs are (at the very least) misleading. This box will convert VGA to HDMI but ONLY at 640x480. Why do they have all those other resolutions on the specs and the box? It will only do 640x480 period. You CANNOT find any reviews of this product ANYWHERE on the net. I can only guess that they were all bad and were pulled. Any specs you find will be cut and paste from the manufacturer.

It cuts off the edges of the image. You can barely see the X to close a window.

Be advised that you'll need to spend another $30+ on cables because it doesn't come with ANY. At least they threw in the power supply !!!

This product does what it says and works well. It uses the standard bluetooth serial port profile, so it doesn't need any special drivers, and you can set up the device as a bluetooth slave or master so you can pair two of these together to form a serial->bluetooth->serial link without any host computer in the middle. Configuration is a one-time job, saved permanently on the device, and is about as straightforward as you can get with serial devices.

Just a couple of downsides:
1. Requires a Windows program for initial setup. Since setup is a one-time thing it's not a huge problem, but a perl script or the like to read/flash the settings would be nice, and would work on virtually all non-Windows platforms. (Setup is done via wired serial port, so it does not require drivers even for setup, but the setup protocol is not documented so you must use their program).

2. The device is quite long, port-to-antenna, and if you'll be using the power adapter (as most users will) that adds length to the back as well. You may need a right-angle adapter (or short serial cable) to use this if you don't have a lot of clearance behind your serial port. But the antenna is hinged so you can use it in any orientation, and it's light enough to suspend from the port, or from a dangling cable, without fear of damage.

And one suggested improvement:
There's no "null modem" mode. It's not hard to slap in an adapter, but it seems like an easy config option to add to a virtual serial port, and I'm disappointed I had to buy a physical adapter.

My home was previously configured to distribute video via CAT5 using component video baluns to two different TVs (one about 100 ft run, the other about 200 ft run). I tried numerous different component video baluns (including some high-end models), extensive efforts grounding components at all ends, etc., and could never get a consistently good picture.
