I brought a 26" LCD HDTV for the kitchen. I have a entry level DirecTV receiver (non HD)in the kitchen w/RCA, S-Video and RF (coaxial) video out. The new LCD only has component, HDMI and to my surprise RF inputs. Being that there was no S-Video input on the LCD, I tried using the RF connection from the receiver and the picture was horrendous!!
Ordered the converter, connected the composite video and RCA audio from the receiver to the converter and ran the HDMI cable from the converter to the LCD. The picture was substantially better! Tremendous improvement!! Despite claims by all converters/scalers you cannot change a 480i picture to "true" 720 or 1080p HD, but it will improve picture quality a great deal.
This was a great find for me, because at least for the time being I dont have to pay DirecTV for a new HD receiver and installation fees, not to mention additional monthly HD charges. I may go that route at a later date, but not today!!! (smile)
