I work as a VJ, and this has been a great 1 step solution to my particular problem!

I recently purchased a refurbished MacBook Pro (may 2011 model, trust me buy refurbished and save more than even educational pricing!) and had discovered that apple does not support any analog signals through the new thunderbolt/miniDisplayport.

Doing some research i discovered that the only would be solution would be to use a mini displayport to vga apple adapter, connected to a scan converter box to output to rca or svideo!

This would mean i would need 2 separate devices, and an extra power supply for the converter.

After a few days of reading old posts on various forums, I discovered this Item on Amazon 9and a couple no name places as well, that was smaller than a couple of adapters chained together, and would cost less than the adapter and converter combined!

To be honest I was a little skeptical, but I was a little desperate to use my new MacBook Pro during live performances so I figured if it didn't work, oh well i could return it.

And it works GREAT!

the unit itself is a fish shaped device with a usb (for power) a stereo plug (for sound) and a miniDisplayport dongle (for video).
The other end has RCA (Yellow, Red, White) female ports, and a female S video Port.

Plugging it in had no issues and my mac detected it right away! A blue light (at least on mine) comes on to show signal is coming through.

Quality was very good (for an analog device) and I would highly recommend this to anyone that has a newer mac that still uses svideo or rca display devices.
Even though i plan on using all hdmi in the future, this is a vital device when I need to work with older equipment (or whatever happens to be at the venue when i set up!!!)

Only con is that it takes up a usb port, but is worth it to not have an extra power supply plugged in.

Now let's just see how long it lasts!
i say that because it is a fairly light device. The cords coming out of it weigh more than the device itself. and running it with a fair amount of video data (the new resolume 4 arena beta!) it did not get very warm after 20 minutes.
It feels as if there is very little on the inside of the device, which leaves me just a tiny bit worried but for 60 (the price i paid) still beats the alternatives.

I wrote a review before, however I don't see it here. Ordered this product on 12/17/12, received very quickly, worked right out of the box, used it on 2 different tv's, went to use it again...doesn't work. Posted a neutral review at the time and was in the process of returning to Amazon.com on 12/22/12. A representative of the seller called me on 12/22/12 and asked about the product and the review. He said it sounded like the product was defective and they would replace it prior to me returning item. I'm ok with that, because I understand defective equipment. Well, they never replaced it. I returned item to Amazon.com yesterday, 12-31-12. Irritated with company representative as he asked me to remove my "neutral" review at the time, so I did. So here we are again, only this time if I could give less than 1 star I would. Not because the product failed, but because the seller's representative did not live up to his promise of replacing the equipment. I apologize for the lengthy review. But I felt it was necessary that someone that did the research let you, the buyer, know beforehand EXACTLY what you're in for when purchasing this product.

Let's get the obvious out of the way: The Wii is not capable of outputting a High Definition picture. It's only capable of Enhanced Definition TV (EDTV) which means it can run most games in the Wii and Gamecube Libraries in 480 Progressive Scan.

Having said that, do NOT expect that this adapter will magically turn the Wii's last-generation graphics into something comparable to the PS3/XB360's visual output.

Let's weigh out the positives and negatives of this product so that you can make a definite decision if this is worth the investment.

TIP: Most people think that having the best possible connection will automatically give you the best visual experience. However, to get the best picture quality, it's actually a balance between your TV settings as well as having the highest video output you can get out of your electronic devices. I suggest you turn off ALL extra picture processing to get the PUREST video output possible. That means turn off edge enhancement, motion plus, dynamic contrast, etc. Trust me when I say you'll be doing yourself a HUGE favor.

NOW... onto the review:

Pros:
- HDMI output!: These days, most newer TVs lack built in Component/Composite connections. I myself have a Samsung LED Smart TV which requires an adapter (packaged with the TV) to plug Component/Composite cables into it. It's VERY ugly, even WITH proper cable management. The Wii HDMI adapter will allow you to employ the use of a single HDMI cable, which is absolutely great in terms of cleaning up the wiring behind your TV.

- 3.5mm audio output: A nice little addition that will let you use a separate audio source if you're planning on playing Wii on a monitor or in the case your TV has a DVI port (which accepts the HDMI's video signal but NOT accepts the audio)

- 720p/1080p toggle: There's a little pinhole on the adapter that lets you switch between the two outputs on the fly (yes, you can press it while your Wii is on and it will change accordingly, so long as your TV supports the 2 separate resolutions). While your TV will tell you what the appropriate output is, this is really no better than any up-scaling DVD player. It simply scales the video so it fits the respective resolution (which results in the ghosting effect you'll notice around objects/lines)

- Cleaner picture!: if you can recall the difference in quality between Composite video to an S-Video connection, that's basically the visual results you'll get with this adapter. I tested this on 3 different TVs: an LCD TV, a plasma TV, and finally an LED TV. In comparison, the visual quality is not much of an improvement over a Component connection on the LCD and plasma models. But... the HDMI connection cleaned up the ghosting that was so apparent when I had the Wii hooked up via Component!

Cons:
- Audio output is LOUD!: This flaw is due to the audio being analog. This may or may not bother you, but it IS noticeable (listen to the ding when navigating the Wii Menu). If you're lucky enough to dial down the audio in Wii game options, that's your best bet to remedy this (unless you use the 3.5mm audio jack and use an external audio source, this may fix the problem)

- Unit stays active while Wii is in Standby mode (yellow light). You'll notice that the device emits a blue light while active. While this is actually not a REALLY bad thing, if you're the type of person that expects the TV to shut off automatically when there's no active video signals, this may be a problem for you.

- PRICEY!: This adapter sells for roughly $35 dollars. It's hard to recommend this adapter at the current price point. I bought it because I like that I don't have to clutter the back of my TV setup with Component wires. This is more than likely the same reason you might want to opt for it; to clean up the clutter that is the Wii's wiring.

As you can see... there's a fair amount of cons to pros. So as I've said before it's REALLY hard to recommend it. If you've got Component inputs on your TV, you can pick up a cheap Wii component cable on Amazon for much cheaper than this adapter. But... if you're like me, here's the main reason I WOULD suggest it:

Portability!: Transport your Wii from place to place? This is a good alternative to carrying a bulky Component wire. As for me, I primarily use the Wii for Netflix in the bedroom, but will occasionally take it to the living room TV to play some Super Smash Bros. So really... this is the EXACT reason I have it, so all I have to do is transport JUST the console without having to go to the back of the TV and remove wiring.

Again... my DEEPEST apologies for the extreme length of this review. But I doubt you're going to find a more comprehensive review than this. I hope it helps! Thanks for reading!

USB Cassette Deck Converter Review

When I ordered this device I didn't really know how much to expect. At under $20 it is cheap, so I wondered how well it would work. Bottom line: it worked very well. It was a good find.

It arrived promptly and I immediately put it to work on a very old audio book on cassette that I thought was a lost cause. I don't even own a cassette deck, so I figured that the audio book was a thing of history. Since I never intend to replace it on a new media I was about to throw it in the trash.

Finding this device was a great discovery. It is simple to use and works just as I needed. Even with the old cassette tapes I had no problems whatsoever. The software it comes with is open source but very effective. I've worked with professional audio tools like WaveLab so I can say from experience that it is a very effective tool. Easy to cut out blank segments between the sides and at the top and end of the recording. Just highlight a segment in the waveform and press delete. done.

With old tapes I was afraid the tension would be a problem. A player has to be able to handle an overly tight spool of tape. This device worked without any fuss. I really like that it is powered completely off the usb port, as I hate extra wall-warts getting in the way. The tape controls are manual, but it will automatically change tape sides. So just start a tape and use the editor to trim it, and in just a minute you have a clean waveform ready to export to mp3. New life to an otherwise lost item.

I got the BM Battery Converter (HDMI to SDI) today from Amazon and was excited to put it to use but after installing the software, I was simply not getting any signal coming through. I was suspecting that the problem was with the HD-SDI cable I got but when I searched through the reviews for the same product at bhphotovideo dot com, I found the solution (thanks to a reviewer RW, July 2013).

Here's what you need to do.

1) Go to Blackmagic's site and download the old software (it must be version 1.9). You can find this file under "Blackmagic Converters 2.1 for Macintosh->Archived drivers".

After this, the Battery Converter should work fine! Blackmagic's products haven't been as reliable as I'd hoped. You really have to snoop around to find basic instructions for making their products work. I had a similar issue with the UltraStudio MiniRecorder. Thankful for the bhphotovideo reviewers!

REVIEW: For best experience, I would strongly suggest using two monitors of the same size. The OS will detect a single monitor that is twice as wide as the connected devices. Cable Matters SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Type A to B Cable in Blue 10 Feet Review

I have a new iMac with 3.0 connectivity and a printer which is removed from the computer by a distance of 12 or more feet. I thought this cable would be the answer, but I didn't factor in the different shape of a USB 3.0 "B" connector from a USB 2.0 "B" connector. The "A" connector is the same for USB 3.0 and USB 2.0. However, the USB 3.0 "B" connector is radically different, so much so that it won't fit into the port of my Canon MSX-512 printer.

This looks like a nice cable, but you'll need a USB 3.0 enabled printer to realize its speed and efficiency. And unlike some 3.0 cables, it won't "retrofit" into the port of a USB 2.0 printer. The maker's description of "backward compatibility" applies to the device using USB 3.0 "A" connectors (i.e. the computer).
