Product Description
Connect the Component Video output from an older DVD player or game console to your new HDMI display with this Component to HDMI Converter by Monoprice! This converter accepts an analog Component (YPbPr) video input and digitizes it for use with an HDMI equipped display. Multi-channel audio can be multiplexed into the HDMI audio/video out by using an S/PDIF Optical Toslink or Digital Coaxial audio input, along with the component video.
Note that this is only a format converter only. It does not upscale a standard definition signal into a high definition video output.
Monoprice Component & S/PDIF Digital Audio to HDMI Converter Review
I picked one of these up locally since I needed a way to pass a component signal from my console to my PVR and then from the PVR to my monitor. My monitor only accepted HDMI and my PVR only took component. This little box managed to fill that void flawlessly.
Being a device from Monoprice, the build quality was not surprising. It's a very sturdy metal casing. I feel like I could toss this around all day and it'd still work (not that I'll try). This is one of the few converters that I've seen that can support up to 1080p as well, which while I'm only using 720p, it's nice to know that there is room to bump up the resolution.
The only real con I can think of is that there is no input for standard audio cables. It does take a digital s/pdif though so if your console/box/whatever you're passing through this has one of those, you're in luck. People who don't, however, may want to rethink this unless you plan on using a headset with a converter or some sort of speaker set that can take standard audio.
Overall, I am very satisfied with this product. It gets the job done and it does so flawlessly. I have it hooked up in the back of my setup and I forget it's even there half the time.
Quick note for first time setup: Make sure all devices connected to this are turned OFF before plugging in the power. Once the converter is on, turn on the subsequent devices and you should get video after a second or two. Plugging in devices that are on and trying to send a signal to this converter before turning it on will not give you an output and will most likely make you think it's not working correctly. It took some blind fiddling around with mine before I gave up and looked at the included instruction booklet. Saved my the hassle of trying to return a perfectly good working product.
