TP-LINK MC220L Gigabit Media Converter, 1000Mbps RJ45 to 1000Mbps SFP slot supporting MiniGBIC modules, chassis mountable Review

If you are looking at a media converter, I assume you know what it is and likely use cases. To sum it up, I have tested these units in two topologies:
1) Network Device - Media Converter - Network Device (for cases where one device does not have a SFP port but needs an SFP)
2) Network Device - Media Converter - Media Converter - Network Device (for cases where TWO devices do not have SFP ports)
These two topologies were tested with a wide variety of Cisco SFP's, such as:
1) GLC-T, SFP-GE-T
2) GLC-SX-MM, SFP-GE-S, GLC-SX-MMD
3) GLC-LH-SM, SFP-GE-L, GLC-LH-SMD
Each topology was tested with each variety of compatible interoperable optics. While all topologies functioned, the dipswitch for topology 1 should ENABLE AUTO NEGOATION while in topology 2 it must be set to NO AUTO NEGOTIATION.
Additionally, one quirk was identified with topology 2 that if you get into a sitaution where the routers on either side of the optical system come up, and do not detect a link, they will shut down while the other router does the same and can result in link flapping forever. This was remedied by power cycling the media converter at the correct time to prevent this mismatch in the handshake.
All in all, this is a good (not perfect) but exceptionally affordable way to get alternate media types attached to copper only devices. Standard indirect connection caveats apply (IF you do this with routers, run BFD with your routing protocol to detect and repair intermediate failures sub-second, IF you do this with switches, run AGGRESSIVE UDLD for the same at L2)
