MarginMart, Inc. DAZ-HDMI-SW005-01 5-Port Smart HDMI Switch Review

This is a great switch at a great price. Most 5-port switches cost twice as much or do not fully support v.1.3 - a standard which Blu-Ray and some games consoles require to work properly. I have seen some where Blu Ray or PS3 will only work on one port. I have successfully tested my own PS3 on all ports.

Some do not auto-switch, and this alone is worth the asking price. I have mine set up without having to use the included remote. I simply have my Harmony universal remote switch each device off before switching on the one I want to use. The switch automatically finds the active port and moves to it. If you have a DVR or other device that is required to be "always-on", simply put it on port 5 - this way, if another port becomes active, it will prioritize a lower numbered one.

I should mention that the product page still claims to ship a mains adapter with this unit, which is supposed to enable the auto-switching functions. The mains adapter is not included anymore, but since auto-switching now works without it anyway, it is not required.

Something else to mention. The unit is about the size of a pack of playing cards. This is good since it is meant to be hidden away. Included is a remote receiver connected with a short cable which you can position in a place to receive commands from the included remote, keeping the main unit out of sight. Since you can use the switch without the remote, you can get by quite easily without hooking this up also.

Switching between two sources on this switch takes about a second, whether using auto-switch or the remote. While I'm sure there are some that are faster, I do not think this worth paying extra for. You may disagree.

There is a manual toggle switch on the top of the main unit. Since I use auto-switching and do not have remote connected, I have had to use this only once, and only when I unplugged my PS3 and then reconnected. For some reason the priority did not work. However, I have had this for 2 months without this happening a second time so did not see a reason to dock a star.

This item is exactly as it was described. We just plugged one end into an HDMI cable, and the other into the USB port on my 6 year old laptop. We then plugged the HDMI cable into the slot on the side of our lcd tv and ran our Amazon video purchases from the laptop to the tv. The sound and picture were excellent, and it couldn't have been easier. My husband, who is very picky about electronics, was surprised by and happy with the results. If you want to run video from your computer to your tv, don't hesitate to buy this item. I'm very happy with my purchase.
PS: in case it matters to someone else, we had to switch our receiver to "CD" to get the sound.

I was very skeptical of this product, having tried several inexpensive video converters in the past with poor results, but this one works perfectly! I'm converting a 1360x768 VGA signal from a Media Center PC to a 1080p HDMI signal on a Sharp 1080p HDTV and the picture looks great! No over or under scan and the image is clear, crisp and has no artifacts. I'm very impressed. I can't believe that I fixed my own TV, There were hundreds of white and black spots that seemed to multiply everyday. I got this part in the mail, followed the Youtube video, and it worked! The first time, it didn't work, but I called the customer service number. They told me the screw to hold it in had a "sweet spot" and to try putting it in again. This product is well made, solid and durable with full metal jacket construction; it has the best in category Quality, Flexibility & Compatibility.

It can extract digital 2CH PCM stereo audio signal from the HDMI input and convert it to 2CH analog stereo output through its RCA style L/R analog output AND SPDIF output at the same time. The SPDIF output can support 5.1CH Dolby Digital 5.1CH / AC3 and DTS 5.1CH audio. The RCA L/R output will not have sound if the incoming audio is multi-channel audio (>2CH). The HDMI output has identical video and audio signals as the A/V signals coming into its HDMI input. User can extract 2CH audio signal from HDMI input for stereo / headphone application and use the SPDIF output for surround receiver 5.1CH audio setup when HDMI source sends DD / DTS 5.1CH.

The L /R stereo output has sound only if the audio format in the HDMI signal is 2CH. This is not a decoder, so if the audio sigal in the HDMI is 5.1CH surround or above, the RCA L/R audio output will not have sound.

As technology improves in one area, it leaves others behind. Like many folks, I have an excellent AVR (Harman-Kardon) that has been working flawlessly for several years. One thing it doesn't do is HDMI. So as HD-outputting devices improve, they start to cut costs by eliminating features that are not "needed." For example, the last two iterations of Roku abandoned the digital audio output. So in order to use my 5.1 sound system, I had to receive stereo from the Roku box and let the AVR simulate 5.1. Not good. This product solves the problem effortlessly, extracting the digital audio from the hdmi signal. Brilliant!

My only caution is that you need to know exactly what resolution and framerate your HDMI is putting out first, and then select the appropriate camera in the driver. For example my Canon HV20 camcorder outputs 1080i, so I needed to select the 1080i 59.97fps option.

I'm using this with the Blackmagic Design ATEM Television Studio Production Switcher and it's working flawlessly. I connected the intensity extreme to the ATEM's program out via HDMI and was able to broadcast to Justin.TV using Flash Media Live Encoder. It carried both the audio and video from the ATEM the moment I plugged it in.

If you're still using firewire to stream high definition to your Mac, this is a great path to using more recent cameras. It not only allows you to live stream 1080p from some of the newer AVCHD cameras and record that video completely uncompressed. Many newer cameras will bypass their internal compression when sending video out through the HDMI port.

Like many other Blackmagic products, simplicity is key to the operation. You'll find it will start working right away when something's plugged in with very minimal configuration. It's really impressive especially considering how inexpensive it is. Just be sure to pick up Apple's overpriced thunderbolt cable as the intensity does not ship with one.

ION Video 2 PC Analog To Digital USB Video Converter for PC Review

Great product for the most part .. does what it is suppose to do. I had some problems with the windows 7 driver though... It said it didn't recognise my device... but I downloaded the correct drivers from the Ionaudio website.
I first uninstalled the program again - then followed the instructions on the above link and only THEN I installed the ion program - and voila! It worked perfectly and the first thing I recorded was brilliant, sound was ok and video quality was better than I expected. Oh! And I had to go into settings and adjust it to PAL as it came out black and white.

IMPORTANT:
I did however discover that the software is powered by ArcSoft which installs a program on your computer that loads when you boot up and constantly phones home and has absolutely nothing to do with the use of the product. After making a firewall rule to keep it from phoning home I noticed considerable slowdown of my internet connection. The cause was ArcSoft trying to phone home every 2-10 seconds (no exaggeration). I tried unsuccessfully to contact ArcSoft about this but can't. So when I booted up my computer I had to go into Processes and manually stop the 2 ArcSoft processes (You'll see that they are from arcsoft in the description). This little phone home program is not listed in Add/Delete software either. I finally discovered where it was and deleted the files. You can find it here:

Just delete the executables (under Type it would say application - windows 7 by default don't show .exe extensions).

Apart from the arcsoft software and me now knowing what their software 'phones home' about - I think this is a brilliant little device and I'd definitely recommend it.

I was made aware that they removed the link to the drivers, here's to get them:
Just go to the Ionaudio website, go to support > documents and drivers
Then just use the drop down menu and choose video to pc or video to pc mk2 and choose your operating system.
It seems like they've already added Windows 8 drivers as well.
