Pyle Home PSPHD42 PSP to HDMI Converter with Upscaling for Portable Play Station Review

If you're someone who can only game on the go, this product isn't going to do you any good. If, however, you are the sort of person who prefers to play your games on your incredibly large TV rather than squint at a microscopic 4.3 inch screen, this product provides what a lot of others previously did not (or at least not without significant blurring by tweaking video display options): full-screen PSP games. As someone who previously purchased the PSP component cables years ago under the misguided assumption that I would be able to play my games on my entire screen rather than just the 480x272 resolution screen, Pyle's PSP Converter provides the exact functionality I wanted.

Pluses:

- Full-screen PSP images on an HDTV after pressing the zoom key. From what I've thrown at it so far from my collection, 2D games such as FFIV and Ys I & II Chronicles make the best transition but 3D like with Ys VII is somewhat less appealing because the limitations of the PSP hardware are more obvious on an HDTV screen. Everything looks gorgeous though and is a testament to how much I love the PSP system. I don't know if it's specifically because of the 720p upconversion, but this is certainly the biggest plus of this device.

- The converter comes with every cable you need - a power cable, a short 2.5 foot HDMI cable (more reasonably sized HDMI cables run pretty cheap here at Amazon), a red/white stereo cable for a stereo system (headphones can be plugged directly into that standard 3.5 mm audio port), and the video cable.

- Setup is pretty simple and should only take around 10 minutes. Keep in mind some of these cables are actually below the top portion of the box that houses the converter.

Minuses:

- At over $90, this is a pricey method of playing your games on an HDTV. Component cables run for ~$15. Whether this price is warranted depends on how much you love your PSP library. Additionally, the recent announcement of the PlayStation Portable Remaster Series means that some PSP games that would take the most advantage of this device will end up looking better on the PS3 with the new HD port/remake. However, the vast majority of PSP games will probably not get remastered (if the PS2 HD versions are any indication).

- Audio if left on the TV rather than through headphones or a stereo system sounds about as poor as the system does by itself. This negative is easily corrected by providing one or the other device (or both).

- If you don't like the PSP library, the odds are that this converter isn't going to magically transform your opinion.

- This is probably pretty obvious, but you will need to plug in your PSP power cord to the PSP while the converter is plugged in. I had the unfortunate experience of playing a couple hours when I first tested it out and whisked my PSP battery to its untimely demise.

All said and done, I will never be playing my PSP on the go again with this converter. I can appreciate the technical prowess of the PSP much better at home. There are plenty of other portable systems out there without such a fantastic converter that can fill the void of gaming while on the move.
