I picked up a relatively beat-up non-working Xevious cabinet for $25 this winter. The monitor tube was toast, and I didn't find this out until after personally rebuilding the chassis board. After rebuilding the power supply and performing a pretty nice restoration, I found that I didn't have a ton of money left over to spend on a CRT replacement and shipping. I do, however, have a surplus of 19" LCD monitors in my garage, so I decided to order this upconverter board for the time being until I run into a decent deal on a locally sourced 19" CRT. Don't worry, arcade purists - This cabinet was not harmed in the making of this review. I fastened the monitor in with industrial grade velcro so as not to put unnecessary holes in the cabinet's monitor shelf. I understand the disdain that some people have for LCD screens in classic games, but back off, guys: it's my cabinet, so I get to do what I want with it. :) It's only temporary anyway. I much prefer CRT on the oldies, but I can only work with what is available to me at any given time, so LCD it is for now.The board arrived quickly and I was very excited to get a display working on my newly pretty-looking Xevious machine. Installation was pretty straightforward. I just connected the R/G/B/S wires from the PCB to the leads of the GBS-8220 board. Applied power to both the game and the upconverter board, and received a decent picture. Tweaked the color controls on the GBS-8220 board as well as the geometrical settings to allow the game to fill the screen, and was pretty impressed with the picture quality.
I am really impressed with how well this thing handles the display on this game. I know others have reported issues with their boards, but it's been working like a charm from day one. Okay, I did run into a brief period of time where I didn't realize that there were color controls on the GBS-8220, and I went on a wild goose chase trying to track down the washed out color issue I had, thinking that maybe I had flaky RAM on the game PCB, or something worse, but that was just an ID-10T error, and was easily resolved by RTFM.
I wish it had come with some JAMMA mounting feet, but I don't necessarily need them. Just screwed the board straight into the side of the cabinet with some 1 1/4" wood screws, and got it in there nice and tight. The screws stick out of the artwork on the right side a little bit, but no one ever goes over to that side of the cabinet anyway. I'M KIDDING, I'm kidding. Man, settle down over there. :) I actually cut up a static bag and taped it to the back of the board to avoid any shorting out, and then set the board inside the coin box for the time being, as I won't be using it in my Xevious cab forever. I really like this board, so I'm toying with the notion of installing it into a Pelican RealArcade joystick box I bought a few years back and making a JAMMA supergun out of it. Would make for a great supergun card, and I need to start amassing a JAMMA board collection anyway. I'm sure the wife will love to see me collecting all those boards and stacking up some plastic bins to store and protect the game boards.
At any rate, if you need to get a working arcade game going on an LCD monitor in a pinch, I think you'll do pretty well with this board. Just be careful, as I've heard that some Nintendo arcade games do not play nice with it. It could have a lot of other cool uses, too, as this board doesn't only take RGB - it can receive a nice wide array of inputs and convert them to VGA. Handy-dandy card. Might pick up another one sometime soon just to have on hand. 5/5 in my book.
